The artist of this work is Anna Atkins. The cyanotype is of British Algae in 1853. The image is from a book so it is no more than 8.5 by 11 inches. She was writing a book for the Botanical society, and needed pictures to go along with it. She is known as the first woman photographer because she had “photographs” to go along with her writing. There is a strong sense of positive vs negative space. Line and Shape is also very strong because there is a lack of fine detail. There is only one color scale present because of the chemicals used. There is a lot of emphasis on the shapes of the plants. The piece is very realistic, it captures real plants from 1853 and on. This piece does not evoke much feeling, however it is made by the first woman “photographer” which is very exciting. There is a serious tone to the work because it was involved in scientific journals. The author created the piece to show what had been written about, but not yet documented, besides drawings. I like this piece, it is artistic and has a curvy organic shape. All her works are important to history, she had done something that had not been done before. The title is of the journal in which all her work was kept, with the explanation of each one and how they were significant. |
Mark Gee is a self taught photographer, based in New Zealand. He has worked on many major movies that have won different types of awards. he focused mainly on astrophotography and even won astrophotographer of the year every year since 2012. he has also been a finalist in the 2012 World Open of Photography, and 4th place in the 2014 International Earth and Sky Photo Competition, as well as having images published in various books and magazines. The photo to the right is what got him famous internationally. He was shooting with a very large lens and was very far away. The photo is actually more of a moving photo and this is a still from it. He has been featured on CNN, BBC, and NASA; he has also done a TEDx talk. The moon in the back is a bit fuzzy, however for the size of the moon versus the size of the people I do not think it is that big of a deal. the silhouettes are very sharp against the lighter color of the moon. the way he set this up the moon is not actually that big but relied heavily on perspective. he was lower so the moon was actually a lot higher than it seems. It was from a lower angle so it gives it a more grand view.

Francesco Tonelli
Artist hero
Francesco Tonelli Francesco Tonelli is a food photographer based in Italy. He makes the food, plates it, photographs and edits it all himself. He taught at the CIA, it was there he realized he wanted to do more than just make the food. He photographs raw ingredients and many different kinds of foods. His website is separated into different food types and some other random categories. Most of his photos are bright and showcase the food, however some do include people, but no faces, just hands. His studio has a kitchen in on part and a studio with lights and neutral tones throughout the whole building. His photos are filled with texture, making the viewer want to reach in and grab whatever is on the plate. Many of his works are on packages of famous food brands, from KIND granola bars to Chobani yogurt. He has most of his photos with a neutral background to keep the focus on the food and only the food. I like all the pieces he has created, they showcase the subject perfectly. |
