front doors of Main St.
I photographed the front doors of some of the homes on Main street. I did not just photograph older Home so also included some newer ones. a front door is the most important part of a home. Many people go in and out and don’t even think about it each day. Many different people go in a home each day. Not just one family may have lived in a home so you will never truly know what kinds or how many people have gone through that door. While doors look simple they actually hold a lot of information. Sometimes they conceal secrets on the other side, they can also be opened to find new opportunities each day, and they can be used keep someone from the same opportunities. I learned a lot about the history of some of the homes on Main street. In one of the article so read it mentioned secret tunnels used to smuggle goods under two Main Street homes. I also learned that Main Street was originally known as water street. I believe each photo is one part of a story. Each home has its own stories from each family or person that has lived there. I don’t necessarily tell a story with my photos but I do bring attention that every front door has seen many people with their own stories. I gathered photos from different kinds of homes and they tell their own little story without revealing too much. You get a sense about the people who live there but you can’t be too sure everything is how it looks on the outside. all the photos have similar compositions but they are not the same. There is not much editing I could do to unify the series more. The part that unifies the series is the subject itself, so a filter could be added to u off it more, but I do t believe this series needs it.
Describe two of your photos to discuss in more detail:
photo 5: This photo is of an old general store. It has been closed for a very long time. It fills the frame and has a lot to look at. The viewer's eye is caught by a strong black line coming in from the left that brings your eye around the photo. This photo also follows the rule of thirds by having the door on the right instead of being centered. I was eye level and pretty close to the building while taking this.
Photo 7: In photo seven I don’t just show a door to a house. I set it up so you could see the stone wall set up on the street as well. The house was lower than the street so I didn’t have much of a choice to include it even if I didn’t want too. However I think it makes the photo stronger. You can only see so many pictures of doors before getting bored. By adding in more than the front door you get to know the house better and may even recognize it if you are from the area. While taking this I was up on the bus so I have a higher angle than I would have had if standing on the street.
